A Portrait of Romain MARI, young skicross athlete
Overview of a season like any other
Romain tells us briefly about his sporting season during this Covidian context.
“After an aborted winter in March 2020 due to health conditions, it was very hard to start a new season. The main objective: win the overall ranking of the European Cup to hope to have a nominative place in the World Cup for next year.
I had a good start to the season, finishing 17th in the World Cup in Val-Thorens in December. The rest of the season was more complicated with a lot of crashes during the first European Cups and a very mixed start in the general ranking.
Halfway through the season, only 4 races left… So I redoubled my efforts in the last few races and made it to the final four times in a row.
At the Skicross World Cup in Reiteralm, Austria, three quarters of the athletes, very experienced skiers, were present, and I achieved two podiums, twice taking 2nd place in the first two races.
There were only two races left in the European Cup finals in Italy in San Pellegrino. I won the first race and finished fourth in the second. This allowed me to make a great comeback in the overall European Cup standings and to win.
Thanks to this victory, I have earned my place in the World Cup for next season, where I will be able to defend my place very hard to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing next winter.
I hope to continue to fulfil my goals as I have done this season.”
