TERIA and GNSS leaders
join forces to protect
surveying professionals
Faced with a worrying upsurge in the theft of surveying equipment, TERIA and several major players in the GNSS industry have decided to take action. Together, they are lending their support to an innovative initiative that could be a game-changer in the fight against this scourge, which affects many professionals in the sector.
A collective response to a growing problem
Theft of surveying equipment is a major concern for surveyors, topographers and construction and public works companies. This high-tech, high-value equipment is stolen from vehicles or by assault and then quickly exported to foreign countries or continents, where it is easily resold.
GNSS receivers and total stations have become prime targets for thieves in recent years. As well as causing human trauma, this situation not only generates significant financial losses, but also disrupts the activities of professionals who depend on these precision tools on a daily basis.
This year, the material loss is estimated at 10 million euros.
It was against this backdrop that Protec-Topo was born, a platform developed by NeoGEO specifically designed to combat these thefts and facilitate the tracking, blocking and recovery of stolen equipment.
Protec Topo: a platform at the service of the community
Protec-Topo is a free collaborative platform that provides a centralised record of complaints, thefts and serial numbers of stolen topographical equipment.
The aim is clear: to create an exhaustive database that will help the authorities and manufacturers to take effective action.
Please note, however, that complaints must be made to the authorities beforehand, so that insurance companies can take over reimbursement.
Thanks to this system, victims of theft can quickly report their missing equipment, while the police and manufacturers have a valuable tool at their disposal for identifying and tracing stolen equipment. This pooling of information increases the chances of recovery and deters illegal resale networks.
What makes this initiative particularly remarkable is the direct financial involvement of manufacturers, making this service free of charge. TERIA, alongside global giants such as Leica and Sogelink, has chosen to contribute to the funding of this platform developed by NeoGEO. This approach reflects a desire to support their users well beyond the simple sale of equipment.
For these manufacturers, it is a shared responsibility: to protect their customers’ investment and guarantee the long-term future of their professional activities. By supporting Protec-Topo, they are demonstrating that their commitment does not end with the delivery of the equipment, but extends to ensuring its safe use over the long term.
Sectoral solidarity for the future
This initiative is a perfect illustration of the strength of collaboration between manufacturers, solution developers and end users. In a sector where trust and reliability are essential, the creation of Protec Topo marks an important step in the collective protection of surveying professionals.
Over and above the security aspect, it also sends out a strong message to criminal networks: the GNSS industry is united and determined to combat equipment theft. Every piece of equipment declared on the platform becomes more difficult to resell, making theft less attractive to criminals.
Protec Topo is a concrete example of how technological innovation and professional solidarity can provide concrete answers to challenges in the field.
TERIA is proud to be part of this initiative and encourages all users of GNSS equipment to report any thefts on the Protec Topo platform. The more complete the database, the more effective we will be in combating this scourge.
